Detention Center Release Routes
A person may leave Hertford County Detention Center for several reasons. Bond, a written promise, unsecured conditions, dismissal with no other hold, or completion of a local term may return that person to the community. The jail carries out a lawful order. It does not set bond, change court dates, decide guilt, or choose punishment. Judicial officials control those decisions. A bond release also does not end the criminal case. Confirm a Detention Center Release
Hertford County provides no official name search, current booking list, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, release archive, or inmate app. Start with direct custody confirmation. The detention information line expressly handles charges and conditions of release or bond. Exact release time, release type, transfer destination, and a copy of the release order may require a written request because those fields are not promised by phone.
- Gather the full name, birth date if known, confinement or booking number if known, and a narrow custody date range.
- Call the detention information line and ask whether the person is held now. If not, ask whether the exit was a community release or a transfer.
- Check the related case in NC Portal. A bond order, dismissal, judgment, or state commitment helps explain legal authority, though it may not show the physical exit time.

A useful request asks for the entry or release summary, booking and release date and time, release type or authority, court commitment or release order, bond or pretrial agreement, and destination or receiving agency. Ask only for records that exist. North Carolina law does not require the office to create a new timeline or answer questions by compiling data it does not keep. If a record is withheld, request the legal basis in writing.
Detention Release Record Retention
The State Archives County Sheriff’s Office schedule gives a concrete retention guide. Item 53 covers active and inactive inmate-incarceration records. The schedule permits destruction in office three years after release or transfer, subject to audit, litigation, and other preservation holds.
This rule describes offline agency records. It does not create an online archive, and it does not promise that every listed field exists in every file. Older details may survive in the court case or a receiving state or federal record even after a routine jail file reaches its disposition date. A narrow, prompt request improves the chance that the correct custody episode can be located. Ask the custodian whether the record still exists rather than assuming guaranteed availability for the full period.
A second schedule item covers weekly inmate-list reports furnished to the Clerk of Superior Court and allows disposal when a list is superseded or obsolete. That short administrative life differs from the three-year incarceration-file schedule. If the sheriff no longer has the requested episode, the clerk’s actual case file may still identify a commitment, bond order, judgment, or dismissal. It remains a court record, not a substitute jail release timestamp.
North Carolina public-record law generally permits inspection and copies of public material at reasonable times. Actual direct reproduction cost may apply, and an extra reasonable charge can apply to extensive clerical or technology work. Since Hertford County publishes no local fee table, ask for the amount before processing.
Hertford Detention Release Profile
Hertford County Detention Center is the county’s active adult local-custody facility. It is at 701 North Taylor Street in Winton and operates under the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office. The official county description calls it a medium-security jail responsible for the care, control, and custody of county inmates. No person is held except under a court order or other lawful authority.
The categories reported on the county page do not form a simple sum, so they should be repeated as published rather than recalculated. The county does not publish annual booking counts, annual release totals, average stays, or turnover. No estimate from a commercial roster should replace those missing figures.

Detention Releases in Court Records
A Hertford County court file can explain why the jail acted. NC Portal may show the case number, parties, events, disposition, judgment details, and court dates for public case types. The clerk’s file is the formal source for a bond order, dismissal, judgment, or commitment. It usually does not show the exact time jail staff completed a physical release, so it should be paired with the sheriff’s release summary.
NC SAVAN/VINELink adds a status channel. A person result may show an identifier, reporting agency or location, custody status, and status date. “Released” or “out of custody” confirms departure from that contributor, subject to delay, but it may represent a transfer. When the result points to DAC, another jail, BOP, or ICE, the next agency must be checked before describing a community release.

Hertford Detention Release History
The county jail should not be confused with two other Hertford County facilities. Rivers Correctional Facility was a private federal contract prison and has been closed since 2021. The Multipurpose Juvenile Home is a non-secure youth program, not an adult jail. Neither supplies the county detention center’s release record. This facility history matters because old search results can send a reader to the wrong custodian.
The sheriff also works with surrounding counties and the Ahoskie, Murfreesboro, and Winton police departments, while providing prisoner transportation. Those links make agency identification vital. A municipal arrest, court trip, or transport out of the jail does not establish release. Published transportation-unit hours are not release hours, and no official routine discharge time, family waiting area, or property-pickup process was found.
